Geneva (IINA) – Qatar called for eradication of the root causes of terrorism that lead to extremism and polarization due to authoritarian regimes' repressive policies, sectarianism and marginalization, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.
Ambassador Faisal Al-Henzab, permanent representative of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, stressed the need to eliminate terrorism in his address to the 29th Session of Human Rights Council that started Monday.
The session, to be concluded on July 3, is discussing Item 2 of the council's agenda on the updated statement of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Al-Henzab stressed that terrorism has taken a serious turn undermining human rights and fundamental freedoms, and threatening international peace and security. He said the spread of intolerance, extremism, incitement to hatred and discrimination based on religion, remains a contemporary issue, adding that such practices have recently contributed to the spread of violence and fall of more victims.
The ambassador noted that his country emphasizes in this regard the important role of the Office of the High Commissioner and the Human Rights (OHCHR) on the use of the available mechanisms to follow up the enforcement of decisions in this regard.
He praised the 5th Session of the Istanbul Process on the implementation of Human Rights Council Resolution 16/18 and its plan of action, calling for taking the outputs of that session seriously and for the follow up of their enforcement to ensure the promotion of tolerance, equality and peaceful coexistence between communities and peoples.
Al-Henna underscored that the phenomenon of terrorism poses a real threat to the international peace and security. Therefore, it requires the international community to demonstrate a genuine political will and a clear strategy to eliminate terrorism. He added that Qatar affirms its firm positions denouncing terrorism and extremism in all their forms and manifestations whatever their motives, justifications and source.
