Istanbul (IINA) – Suleyman Demirel, who served as Turkey's prime minister seven times and as president from 1993 to 2000, died at the age of 91 early Wednesday morning, Anadolu Agency reported.
According to a statement from the private Guven Hospital in the capital Ankara, Demirel had been under treatment for renal failure, heart failure and acute respiratory tract infection since May 13.
With just over a decade in office as premier, he was Turkey’s third-longest serving prime minister after Turkey’s first Prime Minister Ismet Inonu and current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Demirel "will be remembered by our beloved people in times to come for the task he took on, the services he brought about and his political role."
