Washington (IINA) – The Iraqi military has used the F-16 fighter jet in combat operations for the first time, more than a year after Iraq’s officials began pressing Washington to deliver them to assist in the fight against Islamic State (IS) militants.
According to the Washington Post, defense officials in Iraq and the United States on Sunday confirmed the operations, which should significantly upgrade the Iraqi military’s ability to strike IS militants in coming months.
“The United States is committed to building a strategic partnership with Iraq and the Iraqi people and we will continue to work with the government of Iraq on the delivery of the remaining aircraft as they become available within the framework of the production schedule,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement Sunday.
Iraq had reached an agreement to buy 36 of the supersonic aircraft from the United States. The first four fighters were delivered to Iraq in July.
