Cairo (IINA) – Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Ahmed Karti arrived here on Saturday to join his Egyptian and Ethiopian counterparts for trilateral talks on the Grand Renaissance Dam, the state-run MENA news agency reported.
Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Dr Tedros Adhanom arrived here on Friday for the talks, which will focus on the Renaissance Dam and ways of bolstering cooperation among the three of the Nile basin countries.
The three nations signed a declaration of principles on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam during their meeting in Khartoum in March. Since then, the three parties have engaged in intense debate regarding the modalities and core principles in the declaration.
Egypt fears that the new dam will reduce its Nile water share. However, the Ethiopian officials said that the project will not affect the share of the downstream countries (Sudan and Egypt).
The Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam, formerly known as the Millennium Dam, is under construction in the Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia, on the Blue Nile River, which is located about 40 kilometers east of Sudan. The project started in April 2011, and it is expected to be completed by July 2017.
