Montreal, Canada (IINA) – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested during the week around 10 "young persons" from Montreal who are suspected of attempting to leave the country to join extremists, according to media report.
The RCMP has conducted a series of preventative terror-related arrests in the area, picking up a number of these youngs allegedly intent on fleeing the country.
The Mounties said at least 10 suspects were arrested at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport in the pre-emptive police action. Investigators believe they were intent on travelling abroad to join the ranks of foreign terror groups.
Charges have not been filed, but the passports of those arrested have been confiscated.
Investigators have not released yet the identities of those arrested or any information that led to their arrest.
"We can say however, that the families and friends of the young persons have been met by investigators," a statement released on Tuesday evening by the RCMP said.
The investigation is ongoing. Some of those arrested are linked to six people from Quebec who are believed to have left to Turkey in January in an attempt to enter Syria.
From his side Canada's Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney praised the arrests and security officers' "continued vigilance."
