Arakan (IINA) – Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) shot dead a Rohingya fisherman, while fishing in Naf River in the city of Teknaf, Arakan news agency reported.

The police claimed that the deceased, identified as Kala Miah, 40, was living illegally with his family in Teknaf for a long time.

According to an eyewitness, Kala, who had a fishing license from the police, was fishing along with two other Rohingya fishermen when they got a signal from Myanmar troops. The men tried to paddle away for fear of being arrested and beaten. The BGP members opened fire, leaving Kala dead on the spot. The victim’s body had remained floating on the water for hours before his family was allowed to take it for burial.

It is noteworthy that Myanmar authorities issued a decree banning the Rohingya Muslim minority from fishing although they suffer from poverty and hunger. Also, the authorities were deliberately blocking access to Rohingya by aid workers.
