Jakarta, (IINA) - Sierra Leone’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samura Kamara said that his country plans to open an embassy in Indonesia in order to strengthen relations between the two nations.
Kamara said during his meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Minister Retno Marsudi, on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Summit of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jakarta, that his country will open the embassy in Jakarta because it will likely become the center of the Southeast Asia region.
The Minister said that a Sierra Leonean embassy in Indonesia was also needed to increase diplomatic and cooperation relations in various fields that will lead to improving the economy of both countries. "Our President plans to pay a visit as soon as our Indonesia embassy is open", he added.
In addition, the bilateral meeting also discussed increasing bilateral cooperation in various fields, such as trade and multilateral cooperation, through the mechanism of the UN.
"We talked about improving technical cooperation in diplomatic relations and strengthening economic cooperation", Kamara said, noting that the economic cooperation includes investment, construction, agriculture and security issues.
On her part, Minister Marsudi said that Indonesia offers its agriculture industry capacity to Sierra Leone. "We have technical cooperation in diplomacy as well as in agriculture with Sierra Leone", she said.
Moreover, a joint agreement on charter flights was signed by Garuda Indonesia Airways and the Sierra Leone International Airways, stating that Garuda planes will fly Sierra Leonean Hajj pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.
The bilateral meeting also discussed strengthening technical cooperation between the two countries. Sierra Leone received Indonesian technical aid in diplomatic and agricultural training between 2006 and 2014. By 2015, the value of Indonesia-Sierra Leone trade amounted to $24.49 million. Indonesia’s most exported items include crude palm oil, paper, soap, margarine, food products and canned fish.
