Indonesia urges Iran to maintain peace in Middle East

Jakarta, (IINA) - Indonesia has called upon Iran on Monday to exercise restraint in order to maintain stability and peace in the Middle East region, Antara News reported.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo made this demand when he received a courtesy phone call from the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sidelines of the Extraordinary Summit of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
"We conveyed to the Iranian Foreign Minister to convey to President Rouhani the importance of exercising restraint to maintain stability and peace in the Middle East", Widodo said.
According to the president, the Iranian minister of foreign affairs agreed and said he will convey the message to the President of Iran, Hassan Rouhani.
Widodo added that both Indonesia and Iran expressed the same commitment to fully support the independence of Palestine. In addition, to show the same commitment, the two countries agreed to enhance investment cooperation.
"We want to strengthen Indonesian investments in Iran, and Iran will also invest in Indonesia", the president said.
Earlier, the Iranian government expressed appreciation regarding the Indonesian government steps in mediating the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Indonesia undertakes an active diplomatic role in maintaining the stability and security of the world. It said that the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran might have an effect on Indonesia.
