Pyongyang, (IINA) - Amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un announced Thursday that his country’s nuclear weapons should be ready for use at "any moment", DPA reported.
The order came after the UN imposed its strongest sanctions yet on Pyongyang, in response to a nuclear test carried out by North Korea in January.
While attending a rocket test, Kim said the military should also be ready to carry out pre-emptive attacks, North Korea's official KCNA news agency reported.
Kim stressed "the need to get the nuclear warheads deployed for national defense always on standby so as to be fired any moment", he was reported as saying.
"All the people in [North Korea] are now waiting for an order of combat to annihilate the enemy with their surging wrath at the U.S imperialists and South Korea's Park Geun Hye group of traitors", KCNA said, referring to South Korea's president.
Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters on Friday that his country "absolutely cannot accept North Korea's nuclear and missile development".
"In coordination with the international community, we need to urge North Korea to exercise restraint and fully comply with UN Security Council resolutions", which called on the reclusive country to halt nuclear and missile developments, Kishida said.
Communist North Korea's nuclear and military activity this year has heightened tensions on the peninsula and brought international condemnation.
It carried out a nuclear test on January 6, a long-range rocket launch on February 7 and fired a series of projectiles into the sea off its eastern coast on Thursday.
