Raleigh, North Carolina, (IINA) - Fighting Islamophobia was the focus of a forum at the Raleigh Islamic Center in North Carolina on Thursday night, held by Leadership Triangle, in an effort to share the challenges of Muslims, WRAL-TV, virtual channel 5, (CBS-affiliated television) reported.
Among the challenges discussed were misconceptions about the Islamic faith, fear of Muslims, questions about attire and linking terrorism to Islam.
The presentation focused on the history and religious observances of Islam.
“I learned a bit more knowledge about what Islam is and how close it really is to Christianity, and where their roots are,” said Katie Gailes.
The actions of ISIS and recent tragedies, like the murder of Deah Barakat, his wife, Yusor Mohammed, and her sister, Razan Mohammad, created fear among Muslims.
Forums like the one held on Thursday night are designed to break down the misconceptions through education.
“I think this sort of interaction just reinforces the sense of diversity,” Matt Kopac said. “What makes us strong comes from that diversity, and that skills, talents, backgrounds and beliefs that we bring.”
From his side, Fiaz Farred said he believes the Triangle will be more understanding and accepting of Muslims and their faith.
The Islamic Center will hold an open house on March 5 for the public to learn more about Islam.
“I’m just honored to be a part of learning what’s going on right here in the Triangle,” Peggy Tatum said. “I’m not afraid anymore.”
