Cairo (IINA) – Mauritanian Ambassador to Egypt Widadi Ould Sidi Haiba said Saturday that Mauritania will host the upcoming Arab League Summit after Morocco's apology for not being able to host the annual meeting.
Ould Sidi Haiba, who is also Mauritania's permanent representative to the Arab League, noted that the exact date of the summit to be held in Nouakchott will be determined during the next two days, stressing that his country's acceptance to host the summit stems from its keenness on "the continuation of periodic convening of the summit."
For its part, the Arab League announced Saturday that Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby received a phone call from Moroccan Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, who expressed Morocco’s apology for not being able to host the summit scheduled to take place in Marrakesh on April 6-7.
A statement by Morocco's Foreign Ministry said that the decision was made after consultations with a number of Arab states, explaining that in view of the challenges facing the Arabs today, the Arab League Summit as a gathering must not be the reason of its establishment, or it is being held as a mere occasional convention.
The ministry justified the apology for not hosting the summit to the lack of important decisions and concrete initiatives to be put forward to the heads of Arab states.
It is noteworthy that the General Secretariat of the Arab League had previously rescheduled the Marrakech's summit from March 29-30 to April 7-8, at the request of Morocco.
