Amman, (IINA) - Jordanian King Abdullah on Monday expressed his country's desire to boost cooperation with the UN refugee agency to prompt the international community to play a bigger role towards Syrian refugee crisis, in light of the growing burden borne by the Kingdom due to hosting a large number of refugees, Petra reported.
His remarks came during a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, who has recently assumed
Office.
King Abdullah stressed the importance of enhancing international efforts to ensure continued support to countries hosting Syrian refugees, mainly Jordan.
In addition to that, the King reviewed efforts exerted by the Kingdom to provide a round 1.3 million Syrian refugees with humanitarian aid.
In return, Grandi expressed the UNHCR's commitment to supporting Jordan and coordinating with government bodies to alleviate the burdens imposed on the Kingdom in this regard.
In the same context, Jordanian Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour also received Grandi, and the accompanying delegation, in the presence of Interior Minister Salamah Hammad and Minister of Water and Irrigation and Acting Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Hazim Al Nasser.
Talks during the meeting focused on conditions of refugees in the Kingdom.
The prime minister expressed appreciation for efforts that were exerted by Grandi during his post as UNRWA Commissioner General as well as the support he provided to Jordan to continue services to the refugees.
"Jordan, which is a country with limited resources, faces economic challenges and has received waves of forced migrations over the past years that overburdened the Kingdom's limited economic resources," he said, noting that Jordan pins high hopes on the donor conference that will be held in London next month to discuss support to countries hosting Syrian refugees.
