Jeddah (IINA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), since its inception on 25 September 1969, has attached great importance to the principle of respecting the sovereignty of member states, and rejecting any intervention in their internal affairs, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, which stresses "the principle of the sovereign equality of all member states."
The amended OIC Charter, which was adopted in the Islamic Summit Conference held in the Senegalese capital Dakar in March 2008, stipulates "respect for the right of self-determination and non-interference in the internal affairs of member states, as well as respect for the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of each member state."
The Charter, a copy of which was seen by the International Islamic News Agency (IINA), provides for strict adherence to the principle of non-intervention in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state."
The OIC new charter includes a pledge of all member states to "respect the national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of each member state, and not to interfere in the internal affairs of others."
The present Charter has also documented the commitment of the member states to "contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security and to refrain from intervention in each other's internal affairs, in accordance with the UN Charter, the international law and international humanitarian law."
The OIC Charter further stipulates that all "member states are sovereign and independent, and equal in rights and obligations."
