Cairo (IINA) –  Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby condemned Tuesday's terrorist attacks on a number of mosques in Iraq.
Elaraby said in a statement that aggressions on places of worship represent desperate attempts to do harm to the unity of Iraqi people and social peace, and to incite more turmoil in the region, UAE's news agency WAM reported.
The Arab League chief urged all Iraqi political parties to close their ranks to confront terrorist organisations and extremists and preserve the unity of Iraq and safety of its people, institutions and places of worship.
Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy for Iraq Ján Kubiš condemned the attacks against three mosques in the Iraqi Babylon Province on Sunday, as well as other acts of violence. "These attacks are an attempt to stoke sectarian tensions in Iraq and the region," Kubiš said in a statement.
"Those behind the attacks attempt to exploit the current regional circumstances and weaken the unity of Iraq and its people. They serve ultimately the interests of the terrorist ISIL,” he added.
