Washington (IINA) – The White House has rejected the Pentagon’s proposal to close the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay and replace it with a facility in the United States, US media reported.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, citing administration officials, the cost estimate came in at close to $600 million, causing the White House to reject the plan and send it back to the Pentagon for revision.
About $350 million of the cost is related to the construction of a new facility in the U.S., while the annual operating costs of the Pentagon’s plans would be another almost $300 million per year, a defense official told the Journal.
On November 6, the White House said the U.S. Congress should remove obstacles it has imposed to closing the Guantanamo Bay prison, despite the fact that the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives had expressed support for continuation of holding prisoners at this military facility in Cuba.
Later, President Obama signed the “2016 National Defense Authorization Act” barbed with measures designed to undo his bid to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay.
