Nairobi, Kenya (IINA) - Liberia was officially accepted on Wednesday as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Anadolu Agency reported.
The decision was made at the 10th Ministerial Conference, which is currently underway, as officials unanimously voted for Liberia to join the WTO.
Liberian President Sirleaf Johnson thanked the Ministerial conference for accepting her country’s request to become a member of the WTO.
"Liberia's accession to the World Trade Organization today marks another turning point in our history as we continue the journey of economic transformation for inclusive growth", the Liberian Johnson stated.
She noted that policies and procedure have been put in place to ensure a more transparent and predictable business climate for equitable, inclusive growth in Liberia.
Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated Johnson on the country's accession."I am particularly pleased that this decision was taken in Nairobi on African soil at the 10th Ministerial conference. Without a doubt, membership of the World Trade Organization carries considerable gains and benefits that will provide a good future for Liberia", Kenyatta said.
It is noteworthy that Afghanistan was also accepted as a member of the World Trade Organization on Thursday.
