Istanbul (IINA) – The Fifth Islamic Conference of Health Ministers will kick off here Tuesday.
The three-day conference will be attended by a large number of high-level delegations, including ministers and deputy ministers of health from the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as well as observer states and international organizations.
The UN agencies and other international partners who will be attending the conference include the World Health Organization (WHO); Global Polio Eradication Initiative; the Global Fund for fighting HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis; GAVI; Stop TB Partnership; Roll Back Malaria; UNICEF; United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The conference is set to adopt important decisions identifying priorities and follow-up actions pertaining to the major health challenges of the OIC countries. These include strengthening national health systems, intensifying national actions and international cooperation for the prevention and control of diseases, promotion of self-reliance in the production and supply of medicines, vaccines, and medical technologies, improving maternal and child health, promoting cooperation in health education, training and capacity-building.
Among other things, the conference will review the status of polio eradication efforts in member states, progress of joint projects by the OIC General Secretariat, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for tackling cancer in OIC countries in Africa, maternal and newborn health projects for selected countries and synergistic implementation of the objectives of the OIC Strategic Health Program of Action (SHPA) and health-related UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The conference will also include four Panel Discussions involving internal experts. These Panel Discussions will focus on Tackling Cancer; Preparedness and Response in Health Emergencies; Technology Addiction and NGO Involvement in the Improvement of Health Services in OIC member states.
Health has been among the priority issues in the OIC agenda. The 10-year Program of Action included specific actions in the field of health. The OIC Strategic Health Program of Action (SHPA), adopted by the 4th Islamic Conference of Health Ministers in Jakarta in 2013, constitutes a framework for national actions and international collaboration to address priority areas that cover the recently adopted health-related SDG targets. Health has been afforded due prominence in the OIC 2025 Program of Action which is currently under discussion among member states.
