Ljubljana (IINA) – The Slovenian parliament passed a new law, giving the army more powers to help border police manage a flood of refugees seeking to reach northern Europe ahead of the winter season, news agencies reported.
The new legislation was successfully passed early Wednesday, allowing the troops to help secure the nation’s borders amid an influx of thousands of refugees trying to make their way into Slovenia from Croatia since Hungary’s decision to close its borders.
Slovenian government said soldiers could now be given the green light to join, “under very specific circumstances”, border police in patrolling the 670-kilometer border with Croatia, adding that it would ask for financial backup from the EU to deal with an influx that has "exceeded all manageable possibilities".
Since Saturday, when Hungary sealed off its border with Croatia, more than 19,460 migrants have arrived in Slovenia, a nation of two million people.
