Jeddah, (IINA) - Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Madani congratulated the Islamic Nation on the advent of the new Hijri year of 1437. He conveyed his best wishes to the people of the Muslim world and he prayed that Allah would make this a year of peace and prosperity for humanity. He also prayed that security and serenity would return to the Islamic world and prevail in it.
The secretary general affirmed that the Islamic Nation should not look at the start of the Hijri year as a mere calendar event in the continuum of history and not to quickly go through and forget about, but rather look at it as an event filled with the meanings of the Hijra (the Prophet’s migration) as a full string of values of sacrifice, firm belief, velour and quest for a better life, well above a mere selfish individual living.
Madani noted that it became quite evident to all people that the developments, which are witnessed in some parts of the Islamic world, are events that are bound to have historic and crucial implications on the lives of their people. These events demonstrate the urgent need for the OIC as a focal structure in addressing the issues of the Islamic people, in contributing to resolving their crises within a framework of mutuality and of enhanced solidarity among the Islamic Nation, and in concerting efforts for the consecration of joint Islamic action in all sectors such as to give substance to the aspirations of the people of our nation.
The secretary general also invited the member states of OIC to adopt the first day of the Hijri calendar as an official holiday.
