Ramallah, (IINA) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed withdrawing 230,000 identity cards from Palestinians living in the eastern outskirts of Jerusalem, WAFA reported citing Israel Channel II.
Netanyahu’s proposal was discussed during a Cabinet meeting about two weeks ago, and it aims to withdraw the Jerusalem nationality from Palestinians living in the neighborhood districts of Shuafat refugee camp, Kafr Aqab, and As-Sawahreh, in addition to other districts that are located outside of the Israeli-erected segregation barrier.
Two weeks ago, the Israeli cabinet announced that Israeli police would be entitled to “impose a closure on” what it described as “centers of friction and incitement in Jerusalem” and “in accordance with security considerations”. The cabinet also approved the revocation of residency status for Palestinians who carry out attacks on Israeli targets.
Israeli human rights group B'Tselem has called the Israeli government’s response to the recent escalation in the area as “the very inverse of what ought to be done” toward ending the violence.
“The events of recent weeks cannot be viewed in a vacuum, isolated from the reality of the ongoing, daily oppression of four million people, with no hope of change in sight”, the group said in a statement last week.
