Conakry, (IINA) - Guinea's electoral commission declared on Saturday that president Alpha Conde won the re-election with 58 percent of the votes. Therefore, Conde will serve a second five-year term without having a run-off against his closest rival Cellou Dalein Diallo who harbored 31 percent of the votes, Reuters reported.
"The Constitutional Court still needs to render its verdict, but the National Electoral Commission proclaims President Alpha Conde winner in the first round", commission's head Bakary Fofana told a news conference.
Diallo urged his supporters to calm, but he said that he did not recognize the result and that he would ask his supporters to protest against fraud and rigging.
It is noteworthy that candidates have eight days to lodge complaints before the Constitutional Court ratify the election.
Guinea holds one-third of the world's reserves of the aluminum ore bauxite, it also produces diamonds and gold. The country relies on mining to boost its economy, which was estimated at $6.6 billion on 2014 by the World Bank shortly after a slowdown caused from the Ebola outbreak.
The country had more than 2,500 casualties of Ebola since the outbreak was declared in March 2014, the outbreak has dwindled virtually to zero since then, however, two new cases were declared on Friday.
