New York (IINA) – President Mahmoud Abbas raised the Palestinian flag for the first time at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, along with the flags of 193 member states of the United Nations, news agencies reported.
The flag-raising ceremony was attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and a large crowd of diplomats, foreign officials and reporters.
The UN General Assembly approved the resolution to raise the flag with an overwhelming majority voting in favor of it on September 10.
The motion passed with 119 votes in favor, eight voted against, among them Israel, the United States, Canada and Australia, while 45 countries abstained including Britain and Germany.
This resolution constitutes a new phase following the historic vote at the UN General Assembly in November 2012, whereby Palestine was recognized as a "non-member observer state" in the United Nations.
After accessing this status, Palestine joined several international organizations, treaties, conventions and the International Criminal Court (ICC). That followed a failed push for full member state status a year earlier.
