Washington, (IINA) - Researchers have developed a new test that can detect nearly any known virus that infects humans and animals, which offers the potential of diagnosing infections when doctors don’t know what to look for, UPI reported.
Researches named this method the “ViroCap” and they said that it would take years for it to be used regularly on patients, mainly because its accuracy still needs to be verified in extensive clinical trials.
Dr. Gregory Stroch, a professor of pediatrics at Washington University in St. Louis said: "With this test, you don't have to know what you're looking for".
He elaborated: “It casts a broad net and can efficiently detect viruses that are present at very low levels. We think the test will be especially useful in situations where a diagnosis remains elusive after standard testing or in situations in which the cause of a disease outbreak is unknown".
Researchers said that they plan to continue to refine the test and validate its accuracy well beyond the small trials that have been conducted, saying that the test will be publicly released so that other researchers and doctors can work with, use and improve it.
