New York, (IINA) - Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Britain, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and the United states have pledged on Tuesday a total of $1.8 billion for the UN agencies dealing with migrants who were displaced by the conflicts in Syria and other parts of the region, DPA reported.
The announcement came on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned that the global organization's humanitarian budget was under strain.
German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank Steinmeier said that the money would be focused on the UN refugee agency and the World Food Program, adding that support would go to countries that are currently hosting large numbers of migrants such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
Steinmeier said: "In these circumstances it is the duty of the international community to ensure the situation does not become even more drastic".
