Iran's nuclear deal (Google image)
Washington (IINA) – The US Department of State transmitted to the Congress on Sunday the full text of Iran’s nuclear agreement, which means the Senate and the House of Representatives should vote on the deal within a 60-day deadline, starting on Monday.
The Congress, which has a Republican majority, is unlikely to pass the agreement that the Republicans have already criticized.
If the Congress does not pass the agreement, it will not be possible to lift the U.S. sanctions on Iran, as promised by Washington in the deal.
"The 60-day deadline will start on Monday, July 20," State Department spokesperson John Kirby was quoted by AFP as saying.
The move means that the lawmakers have time until September 17 to review the deal.
The nuclear agreement was reached on Tuesday in Vienna between Iran and the six major world powers, known as P5+1 Group (U.S., Russia, China, France, UK and Germany).
