New York (IINA) – The leaders of Venezuela and Guyana agreed on the return of their ambassadors to the respective capitals and expressed willingness to resolve the question of sovereignty over the Essequibo region, news agencies reported.
Presidents Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela and David Granger of Guyana met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who has been attempting to mediate in the dispute.
The two leaders said they were prepared to maintain a dialogue as part of the "long tradition of good neighborly relations," according to a statement released by Ban's office.
The mutual withdrawal of ambassadors came amid a spike in tensions over Essequibo, a resource-rich area of 167,839 square kilometers administered by Guyana but claimed by Venezuela.
The UN chief had been in contact with the two presidents separately ahead of Sunday night's meeting at UN headquarters, Ban's office said.
Speaking to journalists afterward, Maduro described the talks as "tense and difficult”.
