UN Security Council, New York
New York (Ina) – The UN Security Council is set to vote this Monday on a draft resolution ratifying the nuclear agreement reached in Vienna last Tuesday between Iran and world major powers, UN diplomats said.
Adopting the draft resolution, circulated by the United States on Wednesday, is certain as all five veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council as well as Germany, were involved in the negotiations leading to the agreement, according to AFP.
Once adopted, the new resolution will endorse the Vienna Agreement, and will practically replace seven resolutions issued by the United Nations since 2006 to sanction Iran for its nuclear program.
The draft resolution provides for gradual and conditional lifting of international economic sanctions against Iran, in exchange for Tehran’s reduction of its ability to build nuclear weapons.
However, the resolution retains five-year restrictions on conventional weapons, and eight-year restrictions on any trade associated with ballistic missiles which capable of being supplied with nuclear warheads.
