Tunis (TAP) - Tunisia has become a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA), after the designation procedure has been completed, Tunisia Press Agency (TAP) reported.
The announcement was made by the U.S. Department of State at a media note released over the week-end.
Tunisia is the 16th country to become a Major Non-NATO Ally of the United States, after Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Morocco.
“MNNA status sends a strong signal of our support for Tunisia’s decision to join the world’s democracies,” the note said.
It also highlights the value the United States places in its friendship with the Tunisian government and its people.
“MNNA status is a symbol of our close relationships and comes with tangible privileges including eligibility for training, loans of equipment for co-operative research and development,” according to the note.
U.S. President Barack Obama had announced Tunisia’s designation as Major Non-NATO Ally during President Beji Caid Essebsi’s visit to the U.S. on May 20.
