Rabat (IINA) – The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) condemned the Sunday’s blowing up of a tunnel near Aleppo's historical citadel in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo.
The explosion partly destroyed the wall of the ancient citadel and caused major damage in the area.
“Targeting this monumental citadel, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, is “a criminal act and atrocious destruction of a civilizational landmark that survived throughout the ages as a witness to the long history of the Arab-Muslim heritage and its distinctiveness," ISESCO said in a statement obtained by the International Islamic News Agency (IINA).
The organization called on the international community "to work hard to protect the cultural landmarks and residential areas in Syria, which are subjected to daily air attacks and ground shelling.
It may be mentioned here that the government forces are stationed in parts of the Old City of Aleppo as well as inside the citadel, where the landmarks and monumental buildings were repeatedly damaged or completely destroyed as a result of clashes between the regime forces and opposition factions.
