Kuala Lumpur (IINA) – Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak hopes that residents in Ranau, Sabah state, are safe after the area was hit by a moderate earthquake on Friday morning, BERNAMA reported.
"I have been informed that the earthquake occurred not far from Ranau. I hope all are safe and calm," Najib said through his latest Twitter posting.
According to the National Earthquake and Tsunami Center, the earthquake of 5.9 magnitude on the Richter scale occurred in Ranau, Sabah at 7.15 a.m., Friday.
Tremors could be felt in many areas in Sabah including Tambunan, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu and Kota Belud, said the Center’s statement.
The epicenter of the earthquake is 16 km northwest of Ranau, it added.
