Beirut, (IINA) - Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam highlighted the need for consensus among political factions, hours before he is set to embark on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, The Lebanese Daily Star reported.
“I worry about Lebanon and everything in it,” Salam told pan-Arab newspaper Asharq al-Awsat in remarks published Tuesday. “Awareness among the political forces is needed.”
“Consensus strengthens Lebanon against crises,” he stressed.
“We should commit to consensus so that a new president would be elected,” Salam added. “This consensus, at this difficult phase, is the way out of the political crisis facing Lebanon.”
Salam also highlighted the “deep” ties between Riyadh and Beirut, playing down the possibility that any Lebanese political party may harm those ties, in reference to Hezbollah.
Lawmakers have failed in their 23 consecutive session last month to elect a successor to former President Michel Sleiman, whose term ended May last year. Salam said his visit aims to “thank Saudi King Salman and the Saudi leadership for their concern and support for Lebanon and the Lebanese people.”
