Iraqis flee Ramadi city (Google Images)
Baghdad (IINA) – The United Nations has said nearly 25,000 people have fled the city of Ramadi, west of Iraq, after it was attacked by the Islamic State (IS) militants.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Iraq said in a statement that most of the residents continue to flee Ramadi, the capital city of Anbar province, towards Baghdad. It called on the Iraqi authorities to provide emergency relief to those displaced.
The Office stressed that the UN and other aid agencies have started distributing food, water and medical supplies, as well as setting up temporary camps to cater to the refugees, pointing out that funds to help them were running out and aid stocks were almost gone.
Within the past month, UN agencies and non-governmental organizations provided life-assistance to more than 130,000 people who fled Ramadi following IS attacks in April.
It is noteworthy that thousands of families who had earlier fled the fighting returned to their homes in Ramadi. However, when fighting broke out again, they were forced to flee a second time.
