Texas, (IINA) - Two gunmen were killed after they opened fire on Sunday evening outside an event hosted by an anti-Islam group in Garland, Texas., featuring cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), local officials said.
The shooting began shortly before 7 p.m. outside the Curtis Culwell Center at an event organized by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, an anti-Islam organization based in New York, featuring far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who has been outspoken against Muslims, according to media reports.
The two assailants shot a security guard and were, in turn, shot and killed by police officers.
The two armed suspects drove up to the front of the building in a car as the event, called the "Muhammad Art Exhibit," was coming to an end, and began shooting the security officer.
Garland police officers then exchanged fire with the gunmen, and both suspects were shot dead, police said. The security officer was wounded in the gunfire, but the guard's injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to police statement.
The Dallas Morning News reported that critics of the art exhibit condemned the event as an attack on Islam, but the organizers said they were merely exercising their right of free expression.
About 200 people were inside the conference centre at the time and were moved to the back of the building before being evacuated using school buses, police said.
