Daytona Beach, Florida (IINA) - Amid increasing Islamophobic trends in the west, the Islamic Center of Daytona on weekend opened its doors to Muslims and non-Muslims alike, OnIslam reported.
The event, which took place on Saturday, was to let other people to learn more about Muslims and Islam.
Linda McGhee, spokesperson for the association, says everyone is invited to the free event. “We are open to everyone, please come as you are,” she said. “We want people to learn more about Muslims, to see that we are loving people,” Daytona Times reported.
“Extremist groups like ISIS “are not really Muslim, they’re people who want aggravation and terror,” said Frank Binetti after a keynote speech by Imam Belal Alzuhiry during a community outreach program presented by the Muslim Women’s Association of Daytona Beach.
In the mosque, adults deliberated on different issues ranging from sharing warm tales of friendship between people of different faiths; relating how faith in God could overcome any obstacle, vowing to not let bigotry and fear of terrorism divide the community.
The Islamic Center of Daytona creates, promotes and educates by providing a positive and inclusive environment, which raises the awareness of Islam.
Since 9/11, Muslims, estimated between six to seven million, have become sensitized to an erosion of their civil rights, with a prevailing belief that America was stigmatizing their faith.
A recent report by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the University of California said that Islamophobia continues to be on the rise in the US.
