UNESCO welcomes re-opening of Iraq’s National Museum in Baghdad

Tuesday 03 Mar 2015 - 12:14 Makkah mean time-12-5-1436 UNESCO welcomes re-opening of Iraq’s National Museum in Baghdad (Picture from AFP ) Baghdad (IINA) - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has congratulated Iraqi authorities for the 12-year effort to re-open the Baghdad Museum containing artefacts dating back 7,000 years, United Nations reported. This re-opening having “tremendous significance as a response to the deliberate destruction of the country’s other priceless pieces conserved in the Mosul Museum and those in the region of Nineveh, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said. She added ,this opening comes also by confirming the will of the Iraqi Government and support of the international community to highlight this iconic Museum as a defense against intolerance, ignorance and violence perpetrated on the testaments of a nation’s historical past, intercultural exchange and cultural diversity,” The opening of the museum in Baghdad came as the UN Security Council over the weekend denounced the “deliberate destruction of irreplaceable religious and cultural artefacts” housed in Mosul Museum in a statement that strongly condemned the “ongoing barbaric terrorist acts” committed by the militants of ISIL group.
