Khartoum (IINA) – The Direct Aid Society inaugurated here on Wednesday a number of developmental projects in eastern Sudan in the framework of honoring pledges that were offered during the International Donors and Investors' Conference on eastern Sudan hosted by Kuwait in December 2010.

In a statement to KUNA, Chairman of the Kuwait-based Direct Aid Society Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Muhailan said that the projects, estimated to cost up to $ 1.54 million, include building dispensaries, schools, as well as water stations in two areas in eastern Sudan.

These projects constitute the first phase of the society's aid, with a total cost of $ 5 million for developing eastern Sudan, Al-Muhailan noted.

The opening ceremony was attended by a number of senior officials of the two areas, in addition to several leaders of voluntary Arab and Islamic organizations working in Sudan.

The conference on eastern Sudan, hosted by Kuwait on 1-2 December 2010, resulted in funding pledges of around $ 3.5 billion to the post-conflict reconstruction of the region, including $ 500 million from Kuwait.
