Jerusalem (IINA) – UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) appointed the American jurist Mary McGowan-Davis to head the inquiry into the Gaza war crimes committed last summer, just one day after William Schabas announced that he was resigning from the position over allegations of anti-Israel bias.

McGowan Davis, who was previously a member of the probe panel, is thought to be more sympathetic to Israel’s position during the 50-day war than Schabas, according to Israel’s Haaretz daily.

Israeli Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision, expecting McGowan-Davis to be more balanced toward Israel, as she was head of the UNHRC's committee that implemented the findings of the Goldstone fact-finding mission into Israel's Cast Lead operation in Gaza in 2008-2009. Israel cooperated with her at the time and provided her with substantial documentation regarding Israel's own inquiries into the operation, Haaretz reported.
