Jakarta (IINA) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo said enforcing and defending the rights of women including mothers is the responsibility of the government and all parties, Antara news agency reported.

"Congratulations on observing the 86th Mother's Day. I hope that women and mothers can attain what they have aspired for," Joko said at a Mother's Day event held at Ciracas Sports Stadium in East Jakarta on Monday.

"Improving the welfare of women and mothers across the country is not solely the responsibility of the president, vice president and ministers but also of all parties," he said.

Joko noted that a huge gap exists between the challenges faced by women and mothers in Jakarta and in East Nusa Tenggara province. He added that statistics showed that significant efforts are needed to improve the welfare of women throughout the country.

He called on all parties to shoulder the responsibility of improving the lives of women particularly in remote villages in East Nusa Tenggara.
