Dhaka (IINA) – Bangladesh navy forces on Monday intercepted a boat carrying more than 600 illegal migrants in the Bay of Bengal close to the country's southeastern border with Myanmar, officials said.

The navy vessel acting on a tip-off intercepted the boat about 40 nautical miles southeast of Saint Martin's Island on Monday evening.

The navy arrested 14 crew members of the boat hoisting Myanmar flag.

An official said the majority of the illegal migrants, including dozens of women and children, came from different areas in Bangladesh and also comprising Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. The boat was expected to reach the shore by Tuesday morning.

All crew members who are from Myanmar, as well as the illegal migrants will be handed over to local police.
