Jerusalem (IINA) - Palestinian Minister of Prisoners' Affairs Issa Qaraqe said that nearly 1800 sick Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails are subjected to slow death as a result of medical negligence, while the international community stands by and watches in silence.
Qaraqe asked the international community to pressure Israel to abide by the international and humanitarian laws in order to oblige the Israeli Occupation Authority (IOA) to provide captives with the required treatment.
Qaraqe pointed out that the number of sick prisoners has reached 1800, including 85 cases who suffer from serious chronic diseases, including cancer, paralysis, disability, and psychological and neurological diseases.
“Sick prisoners in Israeli jails are facing slow death which points to the importance of probing the health condition of prisoners in Israeli lock-ups and studying treatment mechanisms”, Qaraqe stated.
He also said that the lack of natural sunlight and moisture in the prisons, along with the poor, imbalanced diet and restrictions on using the prison yard for exercise, can lead to health problems such as skin diseases, extreme fatigue, anemia and weakness, kidney problems, rheumatism, dental problems and ulcers.
It is noteworthy that human rights organizations estimate that, since the beginning of the Second Intifada in 2000 until 2008, 17 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli prisons and detention centers as a result of medical negligence.
