Benghazi (IINA) – Seven Libyan soldiers were killed and 12 others wounded Tuesday in a suicide attack on an army checkpoint in the eastern city of Benghazi, Xinhua reported, citing military sources.

Fadl Al-Hassi, investigation officer of the army's Special Forces, conformed the casualties, saying the suicide bomber used an armored vehicle.

Meanwhile, Libyan army spokesman said the attack occurred in Allaithi area on the road leading to Benghazi airport.

Several Libyan Islamic State (IS)-affiliated Twitter accounts claimed the attack, saying "a soldier of the Caliphate attacked the walls of the army".

The incident came a day after prominent militia leader Mohamed Al-Arebi was killed in battle

Benghazi, the birthplace of the 2011 protests that toppled Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been a focal point for the clashes between the army and militias, and plagued by suicide attacks, assassinations and kidnappings.
