Maputo (IINA) – Mozambique's Science, Technology and Higher Education Minister Jorge Nhambiu has challenged producers of knowledge to transform scientific research and technological innovation into levers in the search for solutions to sustainable development, media sources reported.

"The challenges that we are called upon to face clamor for our intervention through production of knowledge aimed at national and regional needs for the eradication of poverty and sustainable development," Nhambiu said.

The minister was speaking here on Monday at the opening of a seminar to launch the regional bloc of the Pan-African Competitiveness Forum (PACF). The meeting also covers the role of women scientists in the region's development.

Nhambiu urged researchers and coordinators of innovation aggregates in the region to generate results from their work which would have a social impact.

He hoped that such meetings would lead to "solutions to regional challenges, contributing significantly to economic and social improvements in our countries."

The seminar was intended to establish a stage for scientific reflection where critical, open and frank debates could take place.

Director of Mozambique's National Research Fund (FNI) Victoria Langa told reporters that there were now about 40 "innovation aggregates" or "clusters" in the country.

Langa said a cluster program's main objective is to combat poverty at local level through stimulating competitiveness for the empowerment of communities.
