OIC chief Iyad Madani (L) during a meeting with President Abbas, Jakarta, Indonesia
Jakarta (IINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani held a series of consultations with heads of delegation and foreign ministers of OIC member states on the sidelines of the 5th Extraordinary Islamic Summit in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
The talks focused on the question of Palestine, the issues featured in the Jakarta Summit agenda and other relevant matters in the bilateral relations between the OIC and its member states.
The Secretary General met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and discussed with him the need for the Jakarta Summit to produce practical and tangible outcome for the Palestinian question.
They also discussed the French initiative to resume the negotiations. President Abbas assured of Palestine’s full support for the initiative given that it has come at an auspicious time to break the deadlock facing the Palestinian issue, and because it meets Palestinians’ requirements. He added that the proposed international conference will be an all-inclusive international mechanism involving many countries. Both sides stressed the importance of national reconciliation, particularly because it would determine the fate of all the efforts being made to restore the rights of the Palestinians.
The OIC chief also met with Prince Hassan bin Talal. Their meeting underscored the need for the success of the Extraordinary Summit in view of the difficult conditions the Palestinians are going through. The prince emphasized the importance of international support for their cause in light of the French initiative. Both sides expressed concern over Israel’s attempts to isolate the occupied Jerusalem from its Palestinian neighbourhood, in order to tear it apart and change its demographics as a prelude to the city's full seizure.
In his discussions with Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani, the Secretary General highlighted the existing relations between the OIC and the Government of Afghanistan, particularly on the upcoming conference of Ulema, which will contribute to the Afghan government’s efforts on the reconciliation, as well as on the ongoing preparations for the conference convening over the coming period.
Rabbani praised the OIC initiatives, describing them as a support for comprehensive national reconciliation in Afghanistan.
Another meeting brought together the Secretary General with Sierra Leone's Foreign Minister Samura Kamara, during which they discussed bilateral relations between the OIC and Sierra Leone, and the situation in Africa, particularly in Mali and Central African Republic. They also discussed the efforts being made by the countries in the region to fight extremism and terrorism in West Africa.
At the end of the first day of preparatory meetings for the Jakarta Summit, Madani received Acting US Special Envoy to the OIC Arsalan Suleman, who assured of Washington's commitment to the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He also stressed that his country would support any international effort to advance negotiations and end the state of decline experienced by the Palestinian cause. Further, the two sides discussed the US-OIC bilateral relations, especially the humanitarian aspects, the issue of Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar and other issues of mutual interest.
