OIC Summit concluded in Jakarta, Indonesia, March 6-7
Jakarta (IINA) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) unveiled a number of concrete steps, including reviving peace process and boycotting Israeli goods produced at settlements, approved by the Extraordinary Islamic Summit on Palestine and Jerusalem concluded here on Monday. President Jokowi said this in his closing address at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit at the Jakarta Convention Center.
"With this summit, the history will record that leaders of the Islamic world sent a strong message to all sides involved in the conflict in Palestine,"
The president underlined the urgency for the OIC to increase its support to Palestine through several concrete steps.
The first step is strengthening political support to revive the peace process. In this regard, he underscored the need to review the Middle East Quartet by increasing the number of its members.
"Indonesia is ready to participate (in it) and support this mechanism," Jokowi said. The second step involves putting further pressure on Israel, including boycotting goods produced in the occupied land, he said.
The third step will be to pressurize the UN Security Council into providing international protection to Palestine and setting a deadline to end the Israeli occupation.
The fourth step will be a firm rejection of any restriction on Palestinians access to Al-Aqsa Mosque and of Israeli action to change the status quo and demography of Jerusalem. The fifth step will be to fulfill urgent humanitarian needs, the president said.
In addition, the OIC Summit also adopted two essential documents, one of which is a resolution reiterating the OIC's principles and commitment towards Palestine and Jerusalem.
"Hopefully, this resolution will be relevant to the wish of the Palestinian people," President Jokowi said.
The other document is Indonesia-initiated Jakarta Declaration containing the OIC leaders' plan for a concrete action to resolve the question of Palestine and Jerusalem.
"I feel happy and warmly welcome the fact that this summit has successfully endorsed the two crucial documents," he said. Indonesia is ready to cooperate with other nations to support the implementation of the declaration, he added.
"In the past couple of days, I really felt the Islamic world's full support to and solidarity with Palestine. I also feel happy with the fact that leaders of the Islamic world have agreed to work more closely to voice their support for the people of Palestine once again," Jokowi said.
The two-day OIC Summit in Jakarta brought together 657 participants, representing 55 countries and two international organizations.
