New York (IINA) – Qatar demanded the UN Security Council to compel Israel to respect the provisions of the international law and the international humanitarian law, and to reject all the practices and illegal actions carried out by the Israeli authorities in the occupied territories, stressing the need to take measures to stop such practices and provide international protection for the Palestinian people, Qatar News Agency reported.
This came in Qatar's statement delivered Tuesday by Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed Al-Thani before the UN Security Council meeting on the "Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestine Question".
In the fulfillment of its humanitarian commitments, Qatar has so far carried out projects worth $ 230 million for Gaza's reconstruction, the statement said.
The statement warned of the Israeli continued violations in the Palestinian territories, including the unilateral measures, settlement activities, the Gaza blockade, restrictions on access to the holy places in Jerusalem and other violations that are contrary to the UN resolutions and the provisions of the international law. It also called on the Security Council to work effectively to achieve tangible progress in the peace process.
On the Syrian crisis, the Qatari statement warned of the continued suffering of the Syrian civilians, pointing to the international community's inability to alleviate this suffering and stop war crimes against humanity committed by the Syrian regime and its militias.
The statement recalled the Security Council's decision no. 2254 which calls to taking all appropriate steps to protect civilians and allow safe access of humanitarian agencies and relief aid to all people in need in Syria.
It also calls for release of detainees, immediate cessation of attacks against civilians, and full implementation of the Council's decisions on the humanitarian situation in Syria. None of those demands have been implemented, the statement noted, adding that additional measures needed to be considered, pursuant to paragraph 6 of resolution 2258 (2015), which calls for an immediate lifting of the siege on populated areas, with a reminder that starvation as a fighting method is prohibited under international humanitarian law.
Qatar confirmed its participation with a high-level delegation in "the Supporting Syria and the Region conference," scheduled to take place in the British capital London in February, according to the statement.
The conference will bring together world leaders from around the globe to rise to the challenge of raising the money needed to help millions of people whose lives have been torn apart by the devastating civil war.
