Misrata, Libya (IINA) - More than 40 people have been killed on Thursday after a truck bomb targeted a police-training center in the western Libyan city of Zliten, BBC reported.
The UN Special Representative to Libya, Martin Kobler, said that the blast was a suicide attack.
Media in Libya said the attack struck the Al-Jahfal training camp while hundreds of recruits were outside performing morning exercises. The training center had been a military base during the rule of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. News agencies say as many as 50 people died in the blast, which was heard 60km away in Misrata.
Libya has been hit by instability since 2011, and there is concern that ISIS militants are gaining a foothold there.
Libya's Al-Naba television network quoted the ministry of health of the rival rebel-led government as saying that a state of emergency had been declared, allowing hospitals in Tripoli and Misrata to receive the wounded.
In December, Libya's rival politicians signed a UN-brokered deal to form a unity government. However, the new government has not been implemented yet.
