Kuwait (IINA) – Arab Youth and Sports Ministers on Saturday called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and global sports bodies to backpedal on their decision to suspend Kuwaiti sports activities, and to allow Kuwaiti athletes to partake in the world sporting events "under the flag of their country", KUNA reported.
The ministers voiced, in a joint statement issued following the 59th session of their Executive Office, their full solidarity with the State of Kuwait in this regard, and appreciated its efforts to support its sports activities and overhaul sports laws.
They lauded Kuwait's relentless respect of international regulations, and effective contributions to supporting regional, Arab and international sports, hoping that international sports organizations would drop their decision to suspend Kuwaiti sports activities. However, they pointed to their keenness on the respect of international regulations, mainly the Olympic Charter, while stressing the sovereign role of states and independent sports bodies.
Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Kuwaiti Minister of Information and State Minister for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud said the meeting has mainly produced the full solidarity of Arab countries with Kuwait in the face of the "arbitrary suspension imposed on Kuwaiti athletes who cannot participate (in sports events) under the flag of Kuwait."
On his part, Chairman of the Executive Office of the Council of Arab Youth and Sports Ministers Khaled Abdulaziz reiterated the council's support to Kuwait against the suspension of its sports activities. He urged the international sports institutions to rethink their decision, and to allow the Kuwaiti athletes to partake in the world sporting events "under the flag of their country" as soon as possible, so that they could join the next Olympic Games in Brazil.
On October 27, the IOC had suspended Kuwaiti sports activities under the pretext that the country's local sports laws run counter to the Olympic Charter.
