Fairfield, California (IINA) - A US Fairfield state representative and town councilor apologized on Friday for a Facebook post contained anti-Muslim remarks, according to media reports.
On Friday, Lawmaker John Picchiotti posted a message from a chain e-mail circulating among white supremacists on his public Facebook page. It praised Catholics for all of their charitable work, but also attacked Muslims, reading in part: "Have you ever seen a Muslim do much of anything that contributes positively to the American way of life?"
Picchiotti, in a statement released by House Republicans and posted on his Facebook page on Friday afternoon, apologized “for the offensive post.”
On the other side, Picchiotti told CBS 13 that he received the message in his email and said he only read the first few paragraphs, which said positive things about Catholics.
Picchiotti said he then "stupidly" posted it on Facebook before reading the rest. Picchiotti claimed he deleted the post after he was made aware of the anti-Islam comments
It is noteworthy that despite the apology, Democrats criticized Picchiotti’s post.
It’s “incredibly frustrating to hear such hatred and bigotry from a state lawmaker,” House Speaker Mark Eves D-North Berwick, said in a statement. “I don’t think it’s what voters expect from their elected leaders."
“Unfortunately, this has become a norm in rhetoric from Republican leaders nationally and some here even in Maine. Rep. Picchiotti is ultimately accountable to his constituents in Fairfield, Mercer and Smithfield, but this reflects poorly on all of us.”
Picchiotti, who called Republican Party leadership on Friday to explain what had happened and how it was a mistake, said that the issue had become inflamed because of politics.
