Baku (IINA) – Azerbaijan’s ruling party Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) has won absolute majority in the parliamentary elections after ballots were counted in 91 percent of the country's constituencies, Russian News Agency TASS reported citing the Azeri Central Election Commission.
Head of Central Election Commission Mazakhir Panakhov said candidates from the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan Party won the majority of 125 seats after counting the results from all 125 districts, which indicated that the party of President Ilham Aliyev got at least 70 seats in the new parliament.
A total of 767 candidates competed for 125 seats in the country’s parliament. More than a half of them represent 15 parties and one bloc uniting seven opposition parties.
It was reported that voter turnout totaled 55.7 percent of the voters.
