Jeddah (IINA) – Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Iyad Ameen Madani welcomed the joint statement issued following the talks on Syria held in Vienna on Friday, and considered it a positive step into the right direction toward resolving the Syrian crisis.
The Secretary General underscored the importance of the joint statement, which inter alia reaffirmed the importance of the territorial integrity of Syria as well as of continued diplomatic efforts toward ending the ongoing war in the country.
Madani reiterated the OIC’s constant support for the demands of the Syrian people for freedom, justice and equality, emphasizing the Organization’s backing for all initiatives aimed at reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
He also welcomed the call for inviting all Syrian parties by the United Nations to engage in a political process that would lead to a new constitution and election administered under the UN supervision, and a formula that would allow a ceasefire on the ground.
The Secretary General reiterated the OIC’s condemnation of all the criminal acts perpetrated by Daesh and all similar terrorist organizations on the Syrian lands and stressed the need to protect Syria against terrorism and its destructive repercussions in order to ensure stability for the whole region.
Madani hopes that the differences among the participants of the Vienna Talks would be narrowed down during the next round. He calls on the international community to take all measures necessary to translate the agreed items into a plan of action that would speed up the alleviation of the Syrian people's suffering.
In this context, the OIC chief underscored the need for giving greater attention to the issue of the Syrian refugees all over the world, and the necessity of intensifying the humanitarian action in this regard.
Madani commended the efforts of the OIC member states participating in the Vienna meeting, and called upon these countries to adopt more coordinated positions in order to secure a solution for the Syrian crisis that goes in line with the consensus among the countries of the region.
